Boarding a flight these days, it seems hard to imagine that flying was once glamorous. Caviar served in ice sculptures, fashion shows down the aisles, spacious cabins, and passengers dressed to the nines.

A slight variation from having to tuck your knees around your ears or poking at something unidentifiable on your food tray.

The Golden Age of Flying is often fondly remembered as an experience for those lucky enough to afford it. Although flying was inaccessible to most, airline prices were heavily regulated and controlled by the government. This forced airlines to become creative and compete by offering passengers unique experiences.

What can we learn from this Golden Age?

So often, when we launch a new offering, we fixate on the price. And that is super important, but in a highly saturated market where it can be a race to the bottom, how else can you distinguish yourself?

  1. Exceptional customer service: How can you make your customers feel valued, seen, and heard at every brand touch point? Online and/or in person.
  2. Unique brand experience: What distinguishes your brand from competitors? Is it the handwritten thank you note that you send with every order? This is where what makes your brand uniquely yours and your customer’s desires meet. It’s in the tiny details.
  3. Focus on quality: There is no substitute for quality. How can you deliver the best every time? And what is your plan for when mistakes happen?
